I already had reviewed Norton Internet Security 2010 few months ago. Instead of writing same thing again, in this writeup I’ll be concentrating on what’s new in Norton Internet Security 2011.
Now you can know Trust Levels, Age and Prevalence of your files by doing a “Reputation Scan”. User is provided with options to do quick or full reputation scans on folder level or drive level. Results of reputation scan can be compared with rest of the Norton community to find out the risk factor in your files. Results can be filtered to see files with low prevalence or files that are very new or have unproven or poor trust rating.
Norton Safe Web (Social Media Scanner):
Norton Safe Web scans all your emails, chats and all the web pages you visit for malicious links and automatically warns you about it. So you can surf the web without any fear!
Norton Safe Web for Facebook scans your Facebook feed for malicious links and generates a summary report which user can share with friends. This feature isn’t limited to owners of Norton Internet security, anyone can visit http://apps.facebook.com/nortonsafeweb/ and run a scan their Facebook feed. User can also protect himself from future attacks by enabling “Auto-Scan”.
Most of the times PC get infected because of downloads you make. Norton Internet Security 2010 had “Download Insight” enabled for IE & Firefox. Download insight automatically scans every downloaded file for viruses and notifies you about it. In Norton Internet Security 2011, this feature is expanded to other browsers including Chrome, Opera and Safari, IM clients including Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger and AOL messenger, email clients such as Outlook and Outlook express and also some of the download managers, FTP and P2p clients.
Pro-active Performance Alerts:
I had written about performance graph, which lets you track your computer’s CPU and memory consumption over time, and also tracks installation of other products on your computer in my write up about Norton Internet Security 2010. NIS 2011 takes it one step further by adding real time proactive performance alerts. Now you will know exactly which application is hogging resources on your PC and kill it! This is measured using four parameters: CPU usage, memory usage, disk IO, and handle counts. When Norton finds an application taking too much resources it notifies the user. User can see further details about it and take an action.
I’m using Norton Internet Security 2010 from more than a year on a PC used by my mom and sister. And so far there was not even a single virus which managed to get through Norton Internet Security. It is just “Install & Forget” for me, I never have to worry or tell mom to not to visit web sites! NIS does it all. Now with Norton Internet Security 2011, it’s even better!
