Apple iPhone in India? How many more days we need to wait for it?

iphone-in-india

I am the big time fan of Apple iPhone. But these days I started hating Apple, arrey how many days I have to wait to get this cool gadget? I really felt bad about Apple for delaying release of iPhone to India. From past few days I am hearing lot of buzz about Airtel & Vodafone releasing iPhone in India. After Apple’s announcement about it’s upgraded 3G version of iphone, Airtel & Vodafone both said they are going to release iPhone to India soon!

A popular tech news website Techtree wrote that, Vodafone is going to start booking for iPhones through customer care & website in another few weeks. Airtel also announced it also starts booking for iPhone in few weeks. Airtel customers can send “iphone” to toll-free number 54321 to get updates about iPhone, prices, package…etc.

What will be the price in India?

Apple announced new upgraded 3G version of iPhone recently, which will be released on 11th July. The new 8 GB model is available for 199 USD (Rs.8246) & 16 GB model for 299 USD (Rs.12,390). But, remember that these prices are only applicable to US in collaboration with AT & T, a big service provider in US. There was a roomer that AT & T was giving some money to Apple for each it customer it gets. It was one of the reason to get such a great gadget for less. So prices in India will depend on service provider who is bringing it to India, i.e, Airtel & Vodafone.

What to do with 3G? It’s not yet in India!

The new Apple iPhone is 3G enabled, but in India 3G technology is not yet in use! I am curious that, will Airtel & Vodafone will launch 3G service along with release of iPhone to India? For those who don’t know about 3G, it’s a third generation mobile technology to bring broadband internet speeds on your mobile phone! you can see Wikipedia entry on 3G for more. Currently India supports only EDGE (Wikipedia), so we will not benefit out of new 3G upgrade in iPhone if our network doesn’t supports it.

I think 3G phone will work with a EDGE sim, the backward compatibility will be there. I prefer iPhone 3G as it has nice features such as GPS. Also it supports third party applications.

By the end of the year…expect the fireworks somewhere in November this year. And Airtel seems quite excited about it, scoop is that some of the top honchos from various regions are currently in talk with the top management trying to chalk out a strategy for the ‘first phase’!
It just keeps getting cooler! :P

I was planning on getting the iPhone from the US, but its a big dud now that its going to be on sale in collabaration with AT&T. I was thinking about getting it here and unlocking it.

India is so backward still in technology. We still don’t have 3G. :(

PS : its rumour and not roomer :p

Called Vodafone Customer Care yester-night (:)) and asked them about this. Said it’ll be launching here around December or so. I don’t remember exactly but with atleast 5 months to go how does it make a difference?? :P

Anyhow, I’d have to disagree with Nishit on both the points. Yes the price will be ‘close’ to 199$ but that doesn’t mean a rupee converter would give you the answer. Taxes and import duties WILL come into play and inflate the price, as they do for ALL electronic consumer goods bought in India. Ask around for a 8800 GTS video card which is supposed to cost a max 300$ and you’d find it’s selling for 14-15k (atleast, it did a while ago when I checked).

Of course you can always expect Vodafone and Airtel to bring the prices to a nice round amount, but it need not necessarily be a lower one. Remember 199$ is a mass-market price in the US and few other places. A phone that costs 10k (IF it does) hits the flaunt-buyer segment here which is sitting quite pretty here. They wouldn’t really see the need to subsidise what basically is a luxury product. This is of course entirely from MY point of view. :P

Point no.2. Well no third party apps? Gee I wonder what that little thing called the SDK was about.

I don’t mean to preach but please do not claim to know more than another person. You can always just give what you think is the correct answer and leave it at that. Consider the possibility that you could be wrong. I could be. If I sounded rude, I’m sorry. The sarcasm in the previous paragraph was just in response to the sarcasm in your own post. Nothing personal.

    Regards,
    Dev
