Freewares I Use | Get the best for free! Part 1

Prashanth on December 26th, 2007

Freewares are softwares which are distributed freely. You need not to pay even a penny for them & they will never expires (like sharewares). Here are few freewares which I use:

Ubuntu – Operating System

Ubuntu is a free linux based operating system also called as “Linux for humans”. It has got almost everything for daily computing needs. A web browser, office suit, IM Client, Image editors/Viewers, Audio/Video editors/players, CD/DVD burnng softwares….as I said almost everything. The main advantage is, not just the OS is free but also softwares you want to install are all free! It’s better to have a try & experience yourself. Download latest Ubuntu 7.10 here. You can create a bootable live CD so that you can have a try withought installing it on your PC. This is also available free with this months (DEC 2007) Digit Magazine

Mozilla Firefox – Web Browser

A free & open source web browser distributed by non profit Mozilla foundation. Firefox is a powerful & safe web browser which could be completely customized according to your needs using themes & add-ons. According to experts & ethical hackers Firefox is more safer than Internet Explorer. Get Firefox Here

VLC Media Player – Multimedia Player

VLC Media player is a cross platform multimedia player works on major OSs like Windows, Linux & Mac. VLC is compact & supports almost all video & audio formats lke MPEG 1, MPEG 2, MPEG 4, DIVX, MP3, OGG, VOB (DVD Video)…etc. Get VLC Media Player here.

Audacity – Audio Editor

A free, opensource, powerful & cross platform audio editor which you can see & edit audio tracks. Removing a portion, mixing tracks (say for example for a fusion dancing), and also you can add lot of available effects. You can also use it for recording & edit recorded sound instantly. Get Audacity here.

Super – Video Converter

The best video converter I ever com across, which is available for free. Just drag & drop any video file & select desired output format, click encode! It’s just as easy as that. I don’t find any un-supported video for mats with this software. But finding the download link on it’s site is bit tricky. I don’t understand why they made it like that. Go to this page & at the end find “Download Super Setup File” link.
